Design of my blog, posted with vodpod

This post combines challenges 2, 3, 6 and 7 of the 30 Days to Kick Start Your Blog Teacher Challenge. I used Text 2 Mind Map, MS Paint, OpenOffice Impress, SlideShare and VodPod to create the slide show above.

  2. This is a fabulous way to share your reflections. It is much more interesting than reading a lot of text. You have given actual examples to share what you are saying and have covered much of blogging. Thanks.
I also learnt of a new tool text2mindmap, so I am going to try that one. How do you find it? Do you ever use it with students?

    • Hi Anne,

I have been struggling, mostly with time, to create posts to describe effective posts (TC 2), effective pages (TC 3) and effective blogging. TC 7 (sidebars and widgets) gave me just the challenge I needed to publish a post about effective blogs. I analyzed my blog to illustrate my points since it was readily accessible, and I had my permission to use it. 😉

I too wanted a post that was informative, concise, not just words and different from what I tried before. The slide show took a couple of days to make and a couple of more to plan, so it actually took as long as it typically takes me to write one text post. I am pretty happy I was able to squeeze so much, and four TCs, into the show without making another long post. (Not that I have anything against long posts, but I like variety to change the pace.)

OpenOffice is the same as MS Office except it is free and open sourced. I used MS Paint to size and modify my Text 2 Mind Map clusters and SlideShare and VodPod to post the clusters. I heard about Text 2 Mind Map through Twitter, a great place for PD, PLN building, information and resources.

I don’t have a class, since I am a substitute teacher. In fact, what you see on all my spaces is what I offer, at least concetely. I would like to think I contribute a bit of abstract or intellectual learning to those I sub as well.

      Thanks for the comment.
      Shawn

  3. Hi Shawn, I see that you are part of post a week with WordPress as well. How is that going? Great to see the badges that you have generated!

    • Hi Anne,

I posted one Post A Week so far! 🙂

Actually, I have been busy working on the KSYB Teacher Challenge posts and my own posts. Most of the Post A Day prompts don’t interest me, but some do. I am drafting some for Stefras’ Bridge, which has also been neglected during the KSYB Challenge.

Regarding the badges, thank you. I enjoyed making the Teacher Challenge one.

      Shawn

  4. Hi,

The slides illustrating the points I make in the concept webs are of my blogs.

I made the concept webs with Text 2 Mind Map.

There was no source for the information. The points and associations I made are products of my opinion, perception and experience.

The information was never supposed to be exhaustive. But, if you think I missed anything or got something wrong, I would enjoy your critique.

    Always eager to learn,
    Shawn

  5. Hello, you used to write fantastic, but the last few posts have been kinda boring… I miss your super writings. Past several posts are just a bit out of track! come on!

    • Hi fit,

      Thank you for your feedback.

Which posts do you like and which do you dislike?

Though I work hard on each post (spending about a week and a half on each), I would enjoy knowing what people like so I can work harder on posts like these.

Always looking to better my work and myself,
      Shawn

  6. My spouse and I absolutely love your blog and find nearly all of your post’s to be precisely what I’m looking for. Does one offer guest writers to write content in your case? I wouldn’t mind composing a post or elaborating on a number of the subjects you write with regards to here. Again, awesome site!

    • Hi Rema,

I would be glad to allow anyone to guest post on my blog, so long as certain conditions are met.

      1. The blog has to be school appropriate and relevant to education. Kids read it!
      2. The blog is not to be abused for commercial or proprietary (self-interest) purposes.
      3. I retain the right to refuse or modify a guest post or its content at any time.

If your intentions are benevolent and enrich teacher or student development, I foresee no problem. I guess post on Educational Comics and find that a fulfilling experience.

Contact me with a proposal through my Contact Me page and we will see what we can do.

      😉 Shawn

  7. Hey Shawn Urban…
Recently I found out that VODPOD is charging for the account to be able to create the VODSPOTs….
I’ve being using VODPOD since 2008 when I created my wordpress blog. Do you know of any other site that works as VODPOD with the capability to create your own channel….?

    • You are welcome, Lezerip.

I am glad you found the information helpful. Hopefully, you will be able to enhance your own blog with this information. Also, don’t be scared to modify your blog layout and content. I have done this a few times to freshen the look of the blog and to clean my sidebar as my blog has grown.

In fact, I am currently considering reinventing my categories and tags to streamline them.

  8. I really enjoyed this post, especially the “examples in this post” portion which made it really easy for me to SEE what you were talking about without even having to leave the article. Thanks.

Have an opinion? What do you think? I'd love to hear from you.
